What's going on when our prayers seem to "fall on deaf ears" in heaven? Why would a good God not be quick to come to our rescue? Matthew tells us about a time when Jesus was accosted by a Canaanite woman. Jesus was very reluctant to help her -- her daughter was tormented by a demon. As we think about the story, we learn valuable lessons about our own relationship with God. We are inspired again to worship God in the name of Jesus.
Mercy is at the heart of everything Jesus did. This was on display when Jesus called Matthew, the tax collector, to be a disciple. Many other sinners came to Jesus, too, and found his mercy.
Disciples of Jesus are as prone as anyone to make judgments about others. In this passage Jesus teaches us to pay attention to our judgmentalism. It might be a sign that we have much bigger issues in ourselves than those we call attention to in others.
