We talk about the story of Irenaeus around AD 180, when he stopped the devastation of the Church by Gnosticism. This is an ancient example of Jesus building His church by leading her into all truth through the Spirit.

Three types of hearts are exposed when they come into the presence of Jesus, the Light of the World. Into All Truth series, lesson 1.
We begin our survey of church history on the question, "How has Jesus been building His church?" Since Eastside Church of Christ descends from the Restoration Movement, our survey begins there. Why did the Lord move so many to renounce their Protestant heritage and pursue an ecumenical unification of Christians according to the New Testament? In this lesson we consider Thomas Campbell's important document from the founding of the Movement. On that evidence it seems that the Spirit of the Lord moved many to despise divisions among Christian, and to pursue Scripture-informed unity in Jesus. Jesus's brothers urge him to take advantage of the opportunity for publicity at the Feast of Booths in Jerusalem. In Jesus's response to them we learn to patiently wait until God grants us the faith that it is His time for us to take action. |
